Quick answer: A folding e-bike is not automatically free luggage on NS trains. For an ordinary electric bicycle, check the complete folded size and the folding and storage conditions. A qualifying small folded bike can travel without a bicycle ticket, including at peak times; a larger or unfolded bike follows different rules.

This guide is for ordinary domestic NS journeys in the Netherlands. It helps you decide whether a planned train commute works with your bicycle, using the TTGO F7 as a size-check example. It does not establish road legality or approval of a particular model by NS.

Start with three measurements, not the word “folding”

NS's formal conditions, Article 5.4, specify these maximum dimensions for the small folded-bike category:

  • Width: 45 cm
  • Length: 86 cm
  • Height: 80 cm
NS published folded-bike maxima: width 45 cm, length 86 cm and height 80 cm
The three published maxima refer to different axes. AI-generated schematic, not to scale; meeting the size limit alone does not guarantee carriage.

Fold the bicycle as instructed by its manufacturer, then measure the outermost points of the package you actually intend to carry. Check the handlebars, pedals, saddle and anything still attached. A basket or bag may change the practical envelope even when the frame folds in exactly the same way.

Record each axis separately. “86 × 45 × 73 cm” and “45 × 86 × 80 cm” are hard to compare until you know which figure is length, width and height. Photograph your measurements if you need to ask the operator a specific question.

There is a wording difference worth checking near a limit: the NS web summary describes a bike smaller than those dimensions, while its formal conditions list maxima. For a bike exactly at a boundary, confirm the actual arrangement with NS before relying on free peak-time carriage.

Choose the right bicycle-ticket category

Your bicycle What to plan for
Small, fully folded bicycle meeting the conditions No Fietskaart Dal is needed for the bike, including at peak times. You still need a valid way to pay for your own journey.
Larger folding bike, or bike travelling unfolded Plan around the ordinary bicycle rules: a Fietskaart Dal, permitted travel times and an available designated bicycle space.

The current NS 2026 price list gives a base Fietskaart Dal price of €8.50. This pays for the bicycle, not your passenger journey. Check the current price and purchase method before paying.

Buying that ticket does not turn a large folded package into unrestricted peak-time luggage. It also does not reserve a bicycle space. NS asks ordinary-bike passengers to use the marked bicycle area, remove luggage and wait for another train when spaces are full. See the current NS bicycle guidance.

For an ordinary bicycle, check the whole travel period

The NS bicycle ticket conditions give weekday off-peak periods of 09:00–16:00 and 18:30–06:30. Starting before a peak period does not normally permit continuing through it with an ordinary bicycle; the conditions include an exception when a train delay prevents completion off-peak.

For example, a planned weekday trip from 15:45 to 16:20 crosses into the restricted period. Do not treat the departure time alone as permission. Check the outward and return itinerary, including the time spent on connecting trains.

NS allows ordinary bicycles all day at weekends, on public holidays except King's Day, and in July and August; the bicycle ticket is still required. These calendar exceptions should not be used to plan a normal autumn weekday commute. Recheck the operator's current times when choosing a date.

Fold before boarding, and plan where it will go

Fold the bicycle before boarding, keep it folded during the journey and unfold after exit
Keep a qualifying small folding bike folded before boarding and throughout the journey. Generic illustration; actual train layouts differ.

The small-bike conditions require the bicycle to stay completely folded throughout the journey: fold before entering and unfold after leaving. It must not obstruct other people or occupy the designated bicycle spaces; use a luggage area where possible. These requirements are separate from the dimensional limit. See Article 5.4 of the NS conditions.

Practise the routine in an uncrowded, safe place before your first commute. Can you manage the folded bicycle alongside your normal work bag? Can you turn through a doorway without swinging the bike into someone? Assess any unavoidable lifting rather than assuming that a hinge makes the bicycle easy to carry.

If the arrangement is awkward at home, a busy platform is unlikely to make it simpler. Allow time for folding, moving to the platform and finding appropriate space; follow staff instructions instead of blocking an entrance while reorganising your belongings.

TTGO F7: a useful example of a close dimensional match

TTGO publishes the following figures for the F7 Folding E-bike in Off White. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements from an independent test.

Measurement TTGO F7, listed NS published maximum
Folded width 45 cm 45 cm
Folded length 86 cm 86 cm
Folded height 73 cm 80 cm

The stated width and length sit exactly at the published limits, leaving no stated margin on those axes. Measure your complete folded configuration and ask NS about a boundary case. This comparison is not an NS endorsement or a guarantee of free carriage.

TTGO also lists the F7 at 30.7 kg. Evaluate that weight against your route and your own handling ability, especially if stairs or repeated lifts are unavoidable. A bike can fold to a smaller storage shape while remaining substantial to move.

If the F7 is on your shortlist, ask TTGO to confirm the dimensions and folding arrangement for your intended configuration before purchase. Use the official contact page, and assess the station routine as carefully as the riding section.

Three checks for the outward and return journey

Three planning checks for a folding-bike journey: size, carrying and the itinerary
Check dimensions, handling and both directions of travel. AI-generated planning illustration; the map is not an NS route, and accessories are not a TTGO bundle.
  1. Size: keep your actual folded measurements with the current conditions.
  2. Carrying: plan how to handle the bicycle and bags at each transfer.
  3. Journey: check every service, date and return time, including any replacement transport.

Other operators, international trains and the R-net Alphen aan den Rijn–Gouda service require their own checks. Do not assume that a replacement bus can carry your bicycle. For a trip continuing abroad, start with NS International's train-specific bicycle guidance; our German regional-train guide covers a separate part of the journey.

Frequently asked questions

Does electric assistance change the folded-size test?

NS includes ordinary electric bicycles in its bicycle rules and states the small folded-bike conditions by size and use. Keep speed pedelecs separate: the Dutch government classes them as mopeds, which NS's conditions exclude. Do not use this guide to classify a modified or faster vehicle.

Can I leave it unfolded because the carriage is quiet?

Do not rely on that for the small folded-bike category. Plan the full fold before boarding, or check the ordinary bicycle conditions for your service and time.

Before committing to a daily commute: settle the size category, try the handling routine and confirm the actual services. If the plan depends on a borderline measurement, resolve that question before buying a bike or ticket.
